Tales from the Front Lines: Modular Homes Solves Theft

A friend of mine was relating a story to me the other day. When he was 16 years old he helped his uncle build a stick-built home. It was a custom home and his uncle intended to build it then sell it for a profit, so he was conscious of the bottom line. The home was good quality and the floorplan was attractive.

The house moved toward completion on an aggressive schedule. Everything went smoothly except for one thing: theft.

My friend tells me that one day he arrived and the temporary storage shed used to hold some of the building material had been broken into and several pieces of material was missing. And later that summer, my friend was shingling with an off-the-street worker his uncle had hired. Then one day, a pile of shingles and the worker disappeared.

Two expensive thefts in one build! It added to time and labor and replacement cost. Bottom line? The bottom line was impacted!

Theft is an issue for site-built homes, whether it’s one house built by one person or it’s a developer building a community. But modular homes help to solve that problem. Modular homes are built off-site, in a controlled factory setting, and then are transported to the site. It’s not easy to move a module that requires a truck and heavy equipment!

Of course, theft avoidance isn’t the primary reason people buy modular homes, but it’s a nice bonus.
